About Michael Bulloch

Michael’s Artist Statement

As a painter I have an insatiable curiosity about life, art and the creative process. I try to paint the beauty that’s in the world around me. Though I might exaggerate the color I see, it is only because I see the promise of that color and want to share it. My hope is when people look at my work they think, “That’s where I, want to be.” I want them to feel peaceful and happy when they see my work, I want to awaken their senses and take them to a magical place... their dreams.

Isn’t that why we all need art in our lives?

About Michael Bulloch

Michael Bulloch was born into an artistic family in Farmington, NM. His mother Sharon Furman Bulloch was a watercolorist and his grandmother Lola Furman was an accomplished New Mexico artist as well as the first head of the art department at San Juan College in Farmington. Michael has studied art all his life and has a Bachelor of Science in Design.

Since art runs in his family it is no surprise that Michael became a painter and graphic artist. Michael had a brush in his hand as soon as he could sit up and he sold his first painting when he was four. The painting sold to a friend of his grandmother for a dollar. However, when he was offered a dollar bill, Michael turned it down saying, “I don’t want paper money, I want real money, the kind that chingles.” Michael has always loved art and is an award winning artist in his own right. His work is owned by collectors worldwide and is part of the permanent collection of Merrion Oil and Gas, San Juan College as well as the City of Bloomfield, NM.

Additionally, Michael teaches Graphic Design and Watercolor at San Juan College and served as the Executive Director of Downtown Farmington: A MainStreet Project as well as The HeART of Farmington Arts & Cultural District, writing the proposal that granted Downtown Farmigton Arts & Cultural District start-up status. Michael has long worked to help grow the economy of Farmington, NM and San Juan County. He wrote several successful grants that brought 3-pocket parks to dowtown Farminngton, icluding the HEart Space at Studio 116. In 2008 Michael co-founded the High Desert Fine Arts Festival in Farmington, NM, with Karen Ellsbury and has been an active board member of the Northwest New Mexico Arts Council since 2000, serving as Vice President and now Treasurer. In 2011 he co-founded Handmade: A Guide to the Arts in the Four Corners, which he published for 6 years, and served as the chairman of the San Juan College Fine Arts Committee. In 2019 Michael joined the board of Film Four Corners and currently serves as its Vice Chairman. Michael continued his economic development work as the executive director for Gallup MainStreet Arts & Cultural District between 2020 and the end of 2025. Michael worked tirelessly helping Gallup bring about positive ecoomic change to it’s downtown through the arts, historic preservation, and asset based economic development.
